Dental Crowns IN Hickory

WHAT IS A DENTAL CROWN?
A dental crown, also known as a cap, is a type of dental restoration that completely caps or encircles a tooth or dental implant. It is typically bonded to the tooth using a dental cement. Crowns can be made from many materials, which are usually fabricated using indirect methods. Crowns are often used to improve the strength or appearance of teeth. When you need a dental crown, it's because your tooth is damaged and needs to be restored.

THE DENTAL CROWN TREATMENT PROCESS

EXAMINATION AND PREPARATION
The first step in the dental crown procedure involves a thorough examination of the tooth that needs to be crowned. This usually involves X-rays to check the roots of the tooth and surrounding bone. If the tooth has extensive decay or there is a risk of infection, a root canal treatment may be performed first. The dentist will then anesthetize the tooth and gum tissue and shape the tooth to properly fit the crown.

IMPRESSION AND CROWN CREATION
After the tooth is reshaped, the dentist will make an impression of the tooth. Impressions of the teeth above and below the tooth to receive the dental crown will also be made to ensure that the crown will fit into your normal bite. The impressions are sent to a dental lab where the crown will be manufactured.

PLACEMENT OF THE PERMANENT CROWN
When the permanent crown is ready, the dentist will remove the temporary crown and check the fit and color of the permanent crown. If everything is looking good, a local anesthetic will be used to numb the tooth and the new crown is permanently cemented in place.
